Mumbai : With more than 6.26 crore Aadhaar cards issued, Maharashtra ranks second in the country after Andhra Pradesh in the UIDAI scheme, an official statement said here Monday.
While Andhra Pradesh has issued 6,59,41,390 cards, Maharashtra follows a close second with 6,26,97,942.
The two states account for a major share of the 40 crore Aadhaar numbers issued till the end of July 2013.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) plans to achieve a target of 60 crore Aadhaar card enrolments by 2014 and the process is continuing at a healthy pace.
In July this year, around two crore new Aadhaar numbers were generated enabling people to authenticate their identity anytime, anywhere with new Aadhar-enabled services.
These include Iris authentication service using one time pin and eKYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) service, using a digital platform.
UIDAI has also announced permanent enrolment centres in different states to enrol residents who have been either left out in earlier enrolment drives or for those wishing to update their Aadhaar card data.
Besides Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, the other states where significant progress has been made in generating Aadhaar cards include Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Punjab, Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir.
