El Cairo : The collapse of a building in Alexandria’s Egyptian port city has killed 23, according to Thursday’s updated reports.
Since Monday, when the building collapsed during reconstruction activities, Emergency services have rescued at least three survivors from the rubble.
Preliminary estimate yielded between 25 and 30 persons buried among bricks and steel.
The cause of the accident is still unknown but government’s experts insisted on the fact that it was due to the use of bad-quality construction materials and insufficient use of iron bars to reinforce the structure.
Alexandria Attorney’s Office ordered arrest warrant against the owner of the building, civil engineer carrying the reconstruction activity and contractor, who has already been arrested.
Collapses are very frequent in Egypt because of the lack of an efficient maintenance.
