Tehran: Iran and world powers will soon resume their expert-level talks on implementing the earlier-reached nuclear deal, it was reported Wednesday.
The Iranian top nuclear negotiator, Abbas Araqchi, made the remarks while talking to semi-official ISNA news agency, saying that the talks would resume in Geneva Thursday, Xinhua reported.
An unnamed official said that the representatives of the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), have not been invited to Thursday’s talks, but if necessary, they would join the talks, according to ISNA.
Last Thursday, local media reported that Iran’s expert-level nuclear negotiating team halted talks with the representatives of world powers in Vienna, which had started Dec 9, for further consultations with Iranian officials.
According to the media reports, the negotiating team of the Islamic republic stopped the talks in a response to the US’s blacklisting of additional companies and individuals for evading existing sanctions against Iran.
The expert-level meetings between Iran and the representatives of powers are aimed at developing mechanisms for implementing the interim deal signed between Iran and the P5+1 group – the US, Britain, France, Russia, China plus Germany – in November.
Iran and the P5+1 group struck a deal in Geneva Nov 24, according to which Iran agreed to freeze part of its nuclear programme in exchange for limited ease of sanctions which hurt its economy.
