New Delhi : With nearly 1,000 police personnel on duty and 40 special teams to check drunken driving and traffic violations, the Delhi police is all geared up for the New Year’s Eve.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Qamar Ahmed said 1,000 policemen would be deployed to regulate the traffic in the city on the Dec 31 evening.
“There will be 40 special teams to check the drunken driving equipped with Alco meters. The security arrangements for the city will be monitored by the top officials,” Ahmed told reporters here Sunday.
He said Connaught Place will be no vehicle zone after 7.30 p.m. and only pedestrians will be allowed to enter the area.
“The entry of vehicles will be restricted from Mandi House, Bangali Market, North Foot of Ranjeet Flyover, Minto Road- DDU Marg crossing and Chelmsford Raod near Munje Chowk, Ashram Marg crossing, Gole Market, GPO, Patel Chowk and Kasturba Gandhi Marg- Ferozshah Road crossing to the city centre.”
He said two magistrates have been deputed to prosecute drivers found in an inebriated state.
In its drive against drunken driving since Dec 24, the Delhi traffic police have prosecuted 350 people.
Meanwhile, Delhi Metro has decided to curtail its services Monday.
In order to ensure the safety of commuters and the Metro property from incidents of vandalism, the Metro services will be partially curtailed on Lines 2 and 3 that connect Rajiv Chowk station on the New Year’s Eve.
Delhi Metro spokesman, Anuj Dayal said, “The last trains from Vishwa Vidyalaya and Central Secretariat would be at 8:15 p.m. and 8:25 p.m. respectively.”
