No compromise on press freedom, but practice self-restraint: Javadekar

New Delhi: Asserting that there can be no compromise on freedom of the press, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar Monday said the press should practise “self-restraint”.

“The need for government to control the press should not arise. Press should practise self-restraint,” Javadekar said while interacting with women journalists at the Indian Women’s Press Corps.

“The Press Council of India is called a toothless wonder, we have to see how to give it teeth,” he said.

“Freedom of speech comes with responsibility,” the minister added.
