Jagatsinghpur : The police Wednesday detained a man for attempting to kill his daughter in a hospital in Orissa’s Jagatsinghpur district minutes after her birth, police officials said.
Niranjan Patra, 28, a resident of Jakoti village in Jagatasinghpur district, some 100 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar, wanted a son but his wife gave birth a daughter Tuesday in the district government hospital here.
A furious Niranjan abused his wife in the hospital though she was suffering from post-labour pain. He allegedly snatched away the baby from his wife and attempted to throttle the baby.
However, the baby was rescued by some hospital staff present there at that time, police said.
According to hospital sources, the infant suffered serious injuries on her neck and her condition is stated to be serious.
“We have detained the father of the infant and investigating the case”, Ramesh Mohapatra, officer in charge of local police station, told IANS.
