Honolulu : The PGA Tour of United States made a big change in its cut-off rules after the second round for this year’s events.
The PGA Tour, which had a policy of top-70 and ties getting to play the weekend, has decided to limit numbers by putting a rider on the ties at the cut line.
The new policy which limits the field for the weekend, allows for the top 70 professionals and ties, as always, but if that number exceeds 78 players, then the closest number of players to 70 will get to play the final two rounds.
So, this week only 69 nine players finished at 1-under 139 to get to the weekend.
But among those at even-par 140, which would have been the cut line under old policy, will still receive official last-place money of $9,699 and 46 points toward the FedExCup. However, they don’t get to tee off on Saturday in the third round.
While K.J. Choi led the field at 11-under 129, down the line missing the cut on account of new policy were the likes of John Daly, Brandt Snedeker and 16 other players.
Most players were unaware of the new cut policy, and some didn’t find out until they went to sign their cards. Snedeker finished at 140 and was told the playing cut was 1 under.
More will be heard on this as in the past players have moved from the cut line to get into the top-10 over the weekend and sometimes even win. In the past Brad Faxon and Jose Maria Olazabal have done so. Also players will be unhappy as they lose a chance of making more money over the weekend and that could affect their chances of getting into the Ryder Cup reckoning.
