Auckland : German Philip Kohlschreiber Saturday defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 in the Heineken Open final, thereby denying the Spaniard from a title since 2003.

Ferrero, a former French Open winner and US Open finalist, lifted the last of his 11 honours in 2003 in Madrid.

With this victory, seventh-seeded Kohlschreiger has registered his second career trophy, the first one he won in his breakthrough in April 2007 in Munich on clay.

Kohlschreiber entered the week coming off a career-best season, posting a personal high of 33 match wins.

The German struck seven aces balanced by seven double-faults and saved four of the five break points that he faced.
