Egypt prosecution to appeal Mubarak verdict

Cairo : Egypt’s Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat Tuesday ordered an appeal against the dropping of a criminal case against ousted former president Hosni Mubarak, media reported.

Saturday, the Cairo Criminal Court dismissed the charges against 86-year-old Mubarak, his interior minister and six of his aides over the killing of protesters in the 2011 protests that ended his 30-year rule.

Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison in 2012 for conspiring in the murder of 239 demonstrators, but an appeal court ordered a retrial.

Barakat has assigned the designated bodies to begin all the appeal measures over Mubarak, his two sons and his top security aides, Xinhua reported citing state-run Nile TV.

According to Egyptian laws, the prosecutor can appeal to Egypt’s Court of Cassation, the country’s highest legal authority.

Mubarak is serving a three-year prison term on separate graft charges after being convicted in May. He has been detained since April 2011, and some legal experts said the past three years would be treated as time served, and he would be freed soon.
