Chennai : Aiming to cash in on the explosive growth of the Indian automobile industry, Bangalore-based Faurecia Automotive Seating India Private Limited (FASI), a wholly owned subsidiary of euro 11.6 billion French auto component group Faurecia, is considering a seating mechanisms plant near New Delhi.
The plant would primarily cater to the needs of Swift, SX4 and two new models of Maruti Suzuki India Limited.
“Presently the seating systems for Swift and SX4 are supplied from our Chinese plant. With more orders we are planning to have a production presence in India,” said James Desban, India general manager and director, FASI.
He said the capital expenditure and the capacity of the proposed Indian plant are yet to be decided.
The French group ranks eighth among global auto component suppliers, specialising in six major vehicle modules: seats, cockpits, doors, acoustic packages, front ends and exhaust systems.
Operating in 28 countries, Faurecia has 190 plants employing around 60,000 people.
“The Indian automobile market is growing and we cannot ignore it,” Desban explained.
Asked about the group’s plans in other business segments, he said the group was talking with General Motors India to supply exhaust systems for its new car.
Faurecia is one of 15 French automotive companies showcasing their products and services at the ongoing 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi.
