New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia, country’s first central minority university, scaled a new height by winning Visitor’s Award for ‘Research’ instituted by the President of India.
The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee will present Visitor’s Award for Central Universities in the categories of ’Best University’, ‘Innovation’ and ‘Research’ for the year 2015 at a function to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on February 4, 2015 which will coincide with the third Conference of the Vice-Chancellors of Central Universities scheduled to be held from February 4-5, 2015.
University of Hyderabad has won the ‘Visitor’s Award’ for ‘Best University’ newly instituted by President Pranab Mukherjee. ‘Visitor’s Award’ for ‘Innovation’ has been won by Prof. Vijay K. Chaudhary & Dr. Amita Gupta of Delhi University for inventing TB Confirm.
The Visitor’s Award for ‘Research’ will be presented to Cosmology and Astrophysics Research Group, Centre for Theoretical Physics, Jamia Millia Islamia for path breaking research carried out in the field of Astrophysics and Cosmology.
The group will receive a Citation and Cash Award of rupees one lakh. The award for various categories were instituted last year by the President of India at the Vice-Chancellors’ Conference with the aim of promoting healthy competition amongst Central Universities and motivating them to adopt best practices from across the world.
It is significant to note that Jamia Millia Islamia would be receiving first such award that resoundingly reinforces the academic objectives of the university to promote research and innovation besides quality teaching.
On receipt of the news, Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, expressed his happiness and congratulated the research group and all the teachers and researchers in the University for making significant strides in advancing the quality of teaching and research in the university. He observed that it was extremely gratifying that Jamia Millia Islamia has been able to make a mark in the academic world and hoped that the institution will take teaching and research forward more vigorously to win Visitor’s Award in the ‘Best University’ category next year.
For selecting the winners, online applications were invited from all Central Universities for each category. The Selection Committee comprised of Omita Paul, Secretary to the President as Chairperson and Secretary, Department of Higher Education, MHRD; Secretary, Department of Science & Technology; Chairman, UGC; Chairperson and Vice Chairpersons of National Innovation Foundation; Director-General, Council for Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and Director IIT Delhi as members chose the winners of the Awards.
