Integrity of Cuba Election System Extolled

Havana : Cuba has created a system that, despite its shortcomings, tries to bring the population closer to open, clear democracy to elect the representatives to the People’s Power, Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon affirmed.

In statements for Juventud Rebelde daily, Alarcon explained the peculiarities of Cuban elections which, on January 20, will hold the second phase with the election of delegates to the Provincial Assemblies, and the People’s Power National Assembly.

When describing the nomination process for those seats, Alarcon indicated that being appointed for territories in which sometimes the nominee is not currently living is a challenge, because that person will represent the whole country and not an area.

The parliament president affirmed that the participation of the entire population in the society’s leadership is a goal, an aspiration, the horizon that allows going forward.

In that connection, he highlighted the Cuban system is a creative, autochthonous formula with good qualities and advantages.

The idea, he said, is to bring representative democracy closer to direct democracy, what is called the promotion of the real participation of people, popular control over the candidate’s performance, parliamentarianism of society.

Referring to the united vote, Alarcon explained it is essential not only to save the homeland and defend the Revolution, and independence, but also to improve it, strengthen the Cuban system, and make it more representative.
