Gaza : Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said that the Jewish state might not reach a peace agreement with the Palestinians, but Tel Aviv must try to reach this deal because keeping the status quo was danagerous and irresponsible.
Olmert said in press remarks Monday that he was not sure “we can reach an agreement and I am not sure we can implement it.”
He said the Israeli opposition and its leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, wanted to keep the status quo at any price “but I tell them that this is a dangerous and irresponsible matter and has many risks.”
He said keeping the status quo would lead to negotiations with Hamas and there would not be an international understanding to the security needs of Israel.
Olmert said that negotiating with the Palestinians to reach an agreement and the actual implementation of this deal were two different issues.
Olmert made the remarks as Fforeign Minister Tzipi Livni and former Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmad Qurei were holding their first meeting over final status issues in occupied Jerusalem.
