Berlin lowers terror warning from Lebanon

By IRNA

Berlin : German security officials have scaled down their terror warning following the latest terror alert from Lebanese authorities, the spokesman for the Interior Ministry Stefan Kaller announced during a press conference in Berlin on Monday.

He added that according to the assessment of security authorities there was a “lower degree of seriousness” in terms of likely terror attacks on German soil.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the Federal Crime Office (BKA) “ruled out” a terror attack.

She did not provide any further details.

The German press reported over the weekend that al-Qaeda sympathizers were allegedly planning terrorist attacks in Germany following the recent arrest of a number suspected Islamist terrorists.

Lebanese security officials had reportedly warned German authorities of possible revenge terror acts by al-Qaeda sympathizers on various sites, among them the German Justice Ministry, military facilities and other government buildings.

An unknown caller had phoned the German embassy in Beirut in early January warning of imminent terror attacks in Germany in the wake of the recent capture of several suspected Islamist terrorists.

A truck, carrying one ton of explosives was said to be on his way to the north German port city of Rostock via Russia and Finland.

The BKA had advised the affected government installations to step up security precautions.

In the past, several similar security alerts turned out to be false alarm.
