New Delhi: Dr. Reem Shamsudeen, a visually-impaired woman from Kerala has sought Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s attention towards practice of housing discrimination in Delhi.
She moved to Delhi in February of this year after getting the job as an Associate Professor of English at a Delhi University-affiliated college. Her move to Delhi coincided with historic win for Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party. In a video post on YouTube Dr. Shamsuddin said that Delhi at that time was filled with the hope and promise of a big change.
In a video message posted yesterday, Dr. Shamsuddin addressed Kejriwal and narrated the discrimination experience that she suffered recently, “After the summer vacation, when I joined the college, I got a rented flat and paid the advance for my mother and me to move in. The day when I was supposed to shift in and go my entire luggage to the new place, the landlord denied giving me the key of the house, saying that she can’t rent her flat out to a Muslim. Of course, it was a shocking experience, considering Delhi boasts of its cosmopolitan and metropolitan nature all the time.”
Before moving to Delhi, Dr. Shamsuddin lived in Hyderabad for eight years completing her Masters and PhD and she said that she never faced discrimination there.
She hoped that Mr. Kejriwal will take action so that no one has to suffer this “shameful and inhuman experience of discrimination” based on their religion, region, sexual preferences, or physical disabilities.
