New Delhi : The Sri Lankan government has said that a devolution package to resolve the protracted ethnic conflict in the island nation will be finalised by January 23.
“The government is committed to announce a devolution package by implementing the All Party Representative Committee (APRC) proposals,” Sri Lankan Minister Maithripala Sirisena told reporters at Colombo last night, news agency Press Trust of India reported Friday.
Sirisena said the APRC was likely to present the devolution proposals on January 23 as per the directives of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The proposals would then be presented to the Sri Lankan Cabinet before being placed in Parliament, he said.
The Minister also dismissed claims that the international community was concerned about the recent scrapping of the Ceasefire Agreement (CFA) with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), signed in 2002. The government had earlier said that it was willing to talk with LTTE, provided it surrender arms.
