Jammu: Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir unit of National Students Union of India (NSUI) today lit candles outside Jammu University and paid tribute to Rohith Vemula, a dalit scholar who committed suicide on January 17 after his suspension from Hyderabad University. Today was Vemula’s 27th Birthday.
Showing solidarity with Vemula, NSUI organized a program at the main gate of Jammau University which was attended by NSUI activists and many students from different colleges.
Holding the picture of Vemula, Neeraj kundan, State President, NSUI, J&K said, “Vemula is a voice of revolution against aristocratic BJP government which has a aged old policy of suppression and exploitation on weaker sections of society.”
Kundan also demanded removal of Smriti Irani, Union HRD Minister for creating political pressure that lead to suspension of Vemula and four of his colleagues. He also sought initiation of criminal proceedings against Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Hyderabad.
Talking on the same line, Raqeeq Khan, State Vice-President NSUI, J&K said,”It is a very sad episode to utter that a scholar has lost his life due to certain political pressures by present government but the criminal silence of government on this burning issue depicts the arrogant attitude of this government.”
The demonstration was also attended by several senior NSUI leaders including Nitin Bakhshi ,Wassim Saroori, Aftab Keen and Abhishek Dogra.
