Sadhvi Pragnya’s bail plea rejected in 2008 Malegaon blast case

Mumbai : A special NIA court here on Tuesday rejected the bail application of 2008 Malegaon blast accused, Sadhvi Pragnya Singh Thakur.

In her plea, she argued that no case was made out against her as per evidence collected by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) but Special Judge N. A. Tikole ruled that prima facie materials are available against the accused, hence the bail application cannot be considered.

The NIA had last month given its no-objection to the bail and said that the evidences on record against Sadhvi are not sufficient to prosecute her.

The Sadhvi contended that there is “no evidence against her” as among the grounds for getting bail.

She also submitted in the court that some of the witnesses – whose statements were used to implicate her – later recanted and filed complaints of torture against the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad.

Seven people were killed in a massive blast at Malegaon, a predominantly Muslim town in Nashik district of north Maharashtra, on September 29, 2008.

The bail application was also opposed by one of the victims of the Malegaon blast on the grounds that granting bail to Sadhvi will be threat to the independent witnesses who were injured in the blast.
