Rome : Resigned Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said Saturday he wanted to quit politics to stay with his family, considering his government’s losing a confidence ovte at the senate two days ago.
“Now i will practice my role as a grandfather,” Prodi said in press remarks, his first since the senate denied his government a vote of confidence on Thursday.
Prodi, who took part in a summit of the democratic party to discuss the political situation in Italy, said he was not ready to lead a an interim government to supervise the amendment of the elections law.
Prodi, who had said this government would mark the end of his political career, described his political experience as a government head as “very beautiful” and asserted that Italy needed “cleanliness and a coordination in positions,” and away from treason and dishonest politics.
Prodi, who defeated his rival Silvio Berlusconi in the 2006 legislative elections , refused to return to early elections with the current elections’ law in place.
