Cairo : Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said on Sunday his country will take all necessary measures to control the Egypt-Gaza border, the official MENA news agency reported.

Abul Gheit made the remarks during talks with visiting interim Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and Acting Foreign Minister Riyadh al-Maliki, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki was quoted as saying.

They discussed recent developments in the Palestinian territories, particularly situation in Gaza Strip as tens of thousands of Gazans crossed into Egypt to meet basic needs, said Zaki.

Abul Gheit said Egypt has never spared any efforts to supporting the Palestinian people, said the spokesman, adding the two sides agreed that Israel should be directly responsible for the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Egyptian-Gaza border remained open for the fifth consecutive day on Sunday and Egyptian security forces is taking steps to close the border area with Gaza.

As the hope to lift Gaza siege faded, Hamas militants on Wednesday morning blew up holes in the border wall separating southern Gaza Strip from Egypt, allowing tens of thousands of Gazans to enter Egypt to purchase necessities.

On Friday, a large number of Palestinians rushed into the Egyptian side again after a bulldozer knocked over a new section of the border fence at the small border town of Rafah.

Israel ordered the shut-down of all Gaza crossings in the wake of Hamas’ violent takeover of Gaza Strip and further tightened the siege on Jan. 17 in retaliation to makeshift rocket attacks carried out by Palestinian militants from Gaza.
