Washington : US Senator Edward Kennedy, an icon of the US left, will endorse fellow Senator Barack Obama for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, the Boston Globe reported.

Kennedy’s public announcement of the endorsement was expected at a rally with Obama Monday in Washington.

Kennedy, 75, has been in the US Senate for 45 years and unsuccessfully sought the centre-left Democratic nomination in 1980. His brother, then-president John F. Kennedy, was assassinated in office in 1963 in Dallas, and brother Robert was a leading presidential candidate when slain at a 1968 rally in Los Angeles.

Edward “Ted” Kennedy is the most prominent surviving member of the famous Massachusetts political family.

Kennedy’s niece, Caroline Kennedy, the only living child of John F. Kennedy, already endorsed Obama Sunday.

Obama, who represents Illinois in the US Senate, is closely challenging frontrunner Senator Hillary Clinton of New York, wife of former president Bill Clinton, for the 2008 Democratic nomination.
