Mumbai : The driver of the Maruti van that exploded Monday in northwest Mumbai, killing at least four children and injuring seven others, has been arrested on charges of negligence, a police official said.
Dattatray Sankhe, investigating officer, told IANS that the children were studying in Millat School on S.V. Road in Jogeshwari West and the accident happened in the same area around 1 p.m. when the students were heading back home.
Ward 57 municipal corporation member Raju Pednekar said: “All the children were in the age group of three to five years.”
The driver, Rafiq Qureshi, told the police that the vehicle suddenly exploded when he turned on the ignition.
It is suspected that CNG was leaking from the tank installed in the vehicle.
Pednekar said the injured children are admitted to the R.N. Cooper hospital at Juhu.
