Patna: Dr Syed Ismail Ahson, a professor of Computer Science at Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi has been appointed as Pro Vice Chancellor of Patna University (PU). This is the first time when an outsider has become a Pro VC.
Dr Ahson is the brother of former Patna University Vice Chancellor, Dr Nazre Ahsan. He was earlier in the erstwhile Bihar College of Engineering. He arrived in Patna on Friday and took charge on Saturday.
He is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Jamia Millia Islamia (A Central University ) New Delhi since October 2001.He has held a number of research and teaching positions in India and abroad. He is the founder Head of the Department of Computer Science at Jamia Millia University where he started several new courses including MCA and MSc (Bioinformatics) and setup a number of teaching and research labs in the department .Earlier, during the period 1978 to 1991 he was an Assistant Professor(1978-85) and full Professor(1986-1991) at the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, where he was also Chairman of the Computer Technology Group, Coordinator of the Microprocessor Applications Program and Professor-in-Charge of the Curriculum Development Cell. Dr. Ahson was Professor and Head of Computer Engineering at King Saud University, Riyadh from 1992 to 2001 before returning back to India in 2001.
Professor Ahson has an outstanding academic record right from the secondary school. Professor Ahson completed his doctoral and post-doctoral research from the Universities of Sheffield and Liverpool, respectively, from 1973-78. He carried out post-doctoral research on real-time on-line computer control of Micromachine at the University of Liverpool. He also underwent advanced training on Hybrid Computing at the University of Sunderland in 1983 under a British Council Scheme. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, Member of ACM , and Member of Mathematical Society of America.
Current research interests : Machine Learning, Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Databases and Data Mining, Information Security, Identity and Access Management , Semantic Web, and Image Processing. Dr Ahson has supervised 20 Ph.D. dissertations and 45 M.S. theses to completion. Dr Ahson has authored over 110 publications including 4 books, 39 journal papers, 56 conference papers and 5 book chapters. He has delivered keynote address and invited talks and chaired technical sessions in conferences in Paris, Athens, Malaysia, Japan , Saudi Arabia , USA and India. He has moved freely across disciplines, lecturing in departments of engineering, computer science, biotechnology, and bioinformatics.
Dr Ahson is Chief Investigator of “Development of a Security Assessment Framework for Object Oriented Software”, a Department of Information Technology, Government of India funded project. He is the Chairperson of a task force on “Identity and Access Management ” under the National e-Governance Programme of Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India. He is a member of selection committees and of board of studies of numerous Indian universities and Government of India organizations. Dr Ahson is associated with American India Foundation’s Digital Equalizer Program aimed at promoting computers in primary and middle schools.
Bihar Governor R. S. Gavai issued an official notification on Saturday, along with Dr. Ahson, Shyam Lal has been made VC of Patna University and Dr Rajdeo Singh, former principal of Raja Singh College, Siwan, have been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzaffarpur.
Meanwhile, Shyam Lal, the new VC of PU who took over the position vacated by the resignation of Y.C. Simadri, said that he felt fortunate to become the VC of seventh oldest university in the nation.
Dr Khalid Mirza, Head of the department of Political Science and presently Director of Insititute of Public Administration of PU has been given the charge as new Pro-VC of Maulana Mazharul Haque Arabic and Persian University. He is the only person from PU to have been selected for the Pro-VC post. No body from PU could make it to the post of VC anywhere this time.
