India cementing ties with Israel, ignoring humanitarian crisis in Gaza Strip

Chennai: In a shameful deviation from Independent India’s foreign policy, the Congress-led UPA Government at the centre has scripted another history of India-Israel relationship. The government allowed Israel’s spy satellite Tescar to be launched from Sriharikotta Satellite Launch Station at the time when human rights of Palestinians in Gaza Strip are brazenly violated by the country.

To protest against the pro-Israel attitude of the Manmohan Singh-led UPA Government, Tamilnadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) organized a demonstration in Chennai on Monday. In a press statement, TMMK said India’s growing relationship with Israel runs contrary to the government’s commitment given in the Common Minimum Programme. The Common Minimum Programme of the UPA government specifically states: “Traditional ties with West Asia will be given a fresh thrust. The UPA government reiterates India’s decades-old commitment to the cause of the Palestinian people for a homeland of their own.”

Ignoring its own commitment, the government seems to be hell-bent on strengthening ties with Israel when millions of Palestinians are facing humanitarian crisis in Gaza Strip. Rather than giving a fresh thrust to India’s traditional ties with West Asia, as it committed in the Common Minimum Program, the Manmohan Singh government has not even bothered to pay lip service to the cause of Palestinians.

The central government has turned a blind eye to the grave human rights violations committed by Israel against the hapless people of Palestine especially the residents of Gaza Strip which has been virtually turned into an open air concentration camp where Israel is committing acts of terror against the civilian population, the press release said.

TMMK has demanded the UPA government to severe India’s diplomatic ties with Israel. Otherwise, the party will be forced to oppose the Congress in the ensuing elections.
