More than a Million Dead in Iraq

By Prensa Latina

New Delhi : More than one million Iraqis have died since the United States invaded their country in 2003, according to a study by British organizations, published on Monday by local media.

One fifth of all Iraqi families have lost at least a member from March, 2003 to August, 2007, said the London-headquartered Labor Opinion Research Center, and the Independent Institute for Studies of Administration and Civil Society.

The study is based on a labor poll among 1,414 Iraqis over 18 and data from the most recent complete census, carried out in 1997, according to which there were 4,050,000 households in that Arab country.

The study showed that the violence Iraq has undergone since the military occupation by the United States and its allies has caused death to more than 1,033,000 of its citizens.

The researchers have asserted that the margin of error is 1.7 percent, making the estimated figure to range from 946,000 to 1,120,000 deaths.

The most significant death incidence has been registered in Baghdad, where over 40 percent of families have lost at least one member.

According to July, 2007 estimates by the occupying troops, Iraq has a 27 million-inhabitant population, and the UN has estimated that four million citizens are currently displaced.
