Port of Spain : Former West Indies cricket captain Ramnaresh Sarwan has reportedly gone into hiding in Guyana, a top cricket board official said here.

According to Chetram Singh, president of the Guyana Cricket Board, Sarwan, while training for the current Stanford 20/20 cricket tournament, “abruptly left practice over the weekend after his relatives called him up, saying that suspicious men were spotted in his neighbourhood.”

However, the police have said that Sarwan has not received any threats but was “taking precautionary measures”.

Sarwan has not been seen in public since.

Sarwan’s fear stems from the recent killing of 11 people of East Indian descent in the farming community of Lusignan, some 15 km from the capital city Georgetown.

Meanwhile, fugitive Rondell Rawlins – widely believed to be responsible for the murders, which took place two weeks back – has threatened more violence if his 18-year old pregnant girlfriend is not found.

Rawlins, a former soldier in the Guyana Security Force, belongs to the Buxton community, who are staunch supporters of the opposition People’s National Congress.

The government has increased the bounty on Rawlins from $150,000 to $250,000 but he still remains untraced despite heavy patrols and searches in the nearby communities.
