Apex court won’t hold urgent hearing on Raj Thackeray’s party

New Delhi : The Supreme Court Friday refused to hear urgently a plea for disbanding the breakaway Shiv Sena party formed by Raj Thackeray.

Refusing an urgent hearing of the plea by advocate Arvind Shukla, a bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justices R.V. Raveendran and J.M. Panchal said they would hear the matter Feb 22.

The bench said: “How can we prevent political parties from doing anything?”

A public interest lawsuit filed by Shukla sought the court’s direction to the Election Commission to derecognise Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) over his controversial remarks against north Indians last week that sparked off violence in Mumbai and other parts of the state.

Shukla also wanted the apex court’s direction to the central government to provide security to non-Maharashtrians living in Mumbai and other cities in Maharashtra.

The petitioner has sought directions to the central government and the Maharashtra government to take action against Thackeray and alleged that his action had endangered the integrity of the nation.
