Spanish Socialists Lead for Elections Drops

By Prensa Latina

Madrid : Only 28 days before general elections in Spain, the gap between the two main contenders closes to three points, considered a technical tie, according to several surveys published Sunday.

In all polls, the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE) of the

government president Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, leads opposition Partido Popular (PP) of Mariano Rajoy, although with lower ratings than in surveys made in the previous weeks..

A study carried out by the firm Metroscopia for the El Pais daily

indicated that the distance between both parties is of 2.9 points (41.7 compared to 38.8 percent).

The balance places the PSOE three tenths of a point under the PP compared to seven days ago in a poll carried out by the same enterprise.

Another investigation done by the Institute Dym for the ABC newspaper, places in 3.2 (42.2 compared to 39.2) the lead of the socialists over the PP, compared to 3.8 verified last week.

For its part, daily El Mundo reproduces a study of the survey firm Sigma Dos, where the difference in favor of PSOE is only of 2.6 points (41.8 to 39.2).

In the elections of March 2004, the PSOE won with a 3.9 point lead and ousted the PP from government with 42.6 percent of the votes against 37.7 percent.

The former obtained 164 seats in parliament and the latter 148.
