New Delhi : Environmentalists opposing the construction of the Commonwealth Games Village on the Yamuna river bank Tuesday suggested an alternative site to Delhi High Court, near Safdarjung Airport in south Delhi.

Submitting his final arguments, P.S. Parikh, counsel for the petitioners, said that the area near Safdarjung Airport was fit for constructing the Commonwealth village for the 2010 games.

A division bench comprising Justices A.K. Sikri and Rekha Sharma posted the matter to Feb 15, when responses were sought from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) over the construction of a depot near the proposed village site on the Yamuna river bank.

The petitioner told the court that 200 acres land near Safdarjung Airport has the best connectivity with the Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium through the ring railway along with the functional sports complex which could be easily developed as a training facility.

Environmentalist Rajinder Singh, filing petition on behalf of other green activists, has alleged that construction of the games village on the Yamuna bank would harm the fragile eco-system.
