Lucknow: A joint campaign by religious leaders, intellectuals, doctors, engineers, teachers and journalists should be launched to combat domestic violence. This was the unanimous view of the speakers at a workshop organized on ‘Abolishing Domestic Violence against Women’ in Lucknow.
Addressing the workshop, Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali said Islam granted rights and protection to women in each and every department of life. If violence against women was still perpetuated, then the guilty was the individual, not the religion, he said. He said social reforms committee of All India Muslim Personal Law Board started an all India campaign to awaken women for their rights.
Renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Kalb-e-Jawwad said women were a vital part of civilized society and this was the reason that the Prophet of Islam accorded such a high status to them. Senior journalist of PTI Sanjay Pandey said media did not present true picture of Muslim women.
UN representative Benani Dhar announced to launch a website ‘violence full stop’. The workshop was jointly organized by Bharti Sewa Sadan, Bhoomi Adhikar Manch and UN’s Solution Exchange Gender Community.
