Maninder Singh attempts suicide, out of danger

New Delhi : Former Indian cricketer Maninder Singh, charged with possessing drugs last month, allegedly slashed his wrists Saturday in his east Delhi home in what police say could be a suicide attempt. He is reported to be out of danger.

The former leg spinner, released on bail last month, was rushed to a hospital after he slashed his wrists at his Preet Vihar residence around 1 a.m. Saturday.

According to police, Maninder's wife and mother and some neighbours took him to the nearby Shanti Mukund Hospital where doctors stitched up his gashed wrists.

"The doctors told us that Maninder is out of danger but he is not in a position to make any statement," Deputy Commissioner of Police Ajay Chaudhry said.

Chaudhry added: "It seems he was in depression, which could have forced him to take such an extreme step. We are waiting for the doctor's report and will be able to reach a conclusion after that."

Maninder was arrested May 22 with another former cricketer, Saim Siddiqui, by Delhi Police Narcotics cell on charges of possessing one-and-a half grams of cocaine. A court granted him bail the next day.

The former cricketer told police interrogators that he used to snort cocaine to get relief from his depression and family problems.

Although he is no more an active cricketer, Maninder is connected with the game as a commentator.

He played international cricket for India for 11 years. He made his Test debut against Pakistan in 1983 at Karachi. His ODI debut, in the same year, was against Zimbabwe in New Delhi.
