Healy comes to Dhoni’s rescue

Melbourne : Mahendra Singh Dhoni might be under fire after wearing illegal wicket-keeping gloves but the Indian skipper has got the support of former Australia wicketkeeper Ian Healey who is willing to give Dhoni the benefit of doubt.

“Did he know the law? He probably didn’t know the actual webbing law,” Healy was quoted as saying in The Age.

Healy said he knew the law only because former England wicketkeeper Bob Taylor approached him once in Melbourne to talk about it while it was being framed.

“I had webbings like Dhoni had yesterday, as did all other keepers. I said (to Taylor), ‘No, just change it. The webbing’s not important at all’. That’s why I was aware that there was a law.

“I don’t think Mahendra would have known – but his manufacturer would have. All manufacturers were pulled into line and had to get it right,” Healy said.

Healy said no more severe sanction was warranted than to confiscate the gloves. But he said match referees needed to be more vigilant.
