This was announced Monday by Anita Das, secretary of the AYUSH (ayurveda, yoga, and naturopathy, unani, siddha and homeopathy), under the health ministry.

She said the final policy would be out in six months.

Speaking at the National Yoga Week here, she said there has been unregulated growth in this area and different institutes are imparting education that is not up to the level and is not satisfactory.

“We don’t think there should be a central regulation. It is not desirable. This is why we have asked major yoga institutes to come out with a self-regulatory policy so that standards of certain level could be maintained,” she said.

Das said the policy, being framed in coordination with the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, an autonomous body under the ministry, would come out with a system of giving accreditation to yoga institutes and also to standardize the courses offered by them.

She said the work in this direction has been going on for the past two years and a broad consensus on self-regulation has been chalked out, though it would take another six months for a policy framework.
