Ranchi : The Birsa Agriculture University (BAU) here has launched a FM radio service for farmers. Governor Syed Sibte Razi launched the service Monday evening.

Broadcasting at 107.8 MHz, the station covers a radius of 25 km around Ranchi. It will start with two and a half hours of programming, to be extended later. The programmes will be aired between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. and then between 5 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. now.

BAU Vice Chancellor N.N. Singh said: “The FM radio service will address the problems faced by farmers. It will improve the farmers’ knowledge in agriculture, animal husbandry, self employment and culture.”

This is first time any agriculture university in India has launched an FM radio service for farmers. There is no licence fee to run a community radio service.

“BAU has launched the FM radio in collaboration with World Development Foundation and Media Lab Asia. Both organisations extended technical and financial support,” said an official of BAU.

The service can be commercialised in a restricted manner.
