German Machinists Strike

By Prensa Latina

Berlin : The vice president of the German Machinistós union (GDL), Claus Weselsky, announced that they would go on strike in spite of an urgent demand imposed by the rail management.

The Deutsche Bahn train company lodged an appeal to the Industrial Court of Frankfort.

The GDL strike is scheduled to kick off on Monday and last an undetermined length of time, paralyzing long distance, regional and local stations.

However, the union action could be stopped at the last minute if an agreement is achieved between the parts.

After three months of conflict management GDL arrived at a consensus regarding a new collective agreement for the 20 thousand workers but negotiations ended in a stalemate when it was time to sign.

The machinists demand an eight percent salary increase to be granted within two months and eleven percent as of next September.
