Now foreigners too will pay in rupees for Taj visit

Agra : Foreigners visiting the Taj Mahal here Tuesday on will have to pay the entry fee in rupees and dollars will no longer be accepted, officials said.

But each foreigner will have to pay a hefty Rs.750 ($18) per visit, as compared to Rs 20 an Indian would pay for visiting the 17th century monument. But the visit charges have been scaled down drastically for the visitors from SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries.

Instead of Rs 750, they too would pay only Rs.20 – the same amount payable by Indians, said D.N. Dimri, superintending archaeologist (Agra circle).

The director general of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) issued the notification to this effect Feb 27.

Dimri said he received the orders Monday evening.

“We immediately got into action to start the system from today (Tuesday) to ensure there was no further loss due to fall in the value of dollars,” the official told IANS.
