Chittorgarh situation tense but under control, say police

Jaipur, March 23 (IANS) The situation in curfew-bound Rajasthan town of Chittorgarh continued to be tense but is under control, police officials said Sunday.

The fort town, over 350 km from here, was rocked by communal violence Saturday and the local administration was forced to impose curfew after mobs torched shops and pelted stones.

“The situation seems to be under control as no further violence has been reported from any part of the town since Saturday evening,” a senior police official said.

The police said 23 shops and 14 kiosks were put to fire during the clashes.

The trouble started when members of one community saw some slogans written on a wall against them and started throwing stones at members of another community.

Unconfirmed reports said at least 18 people, including five policemen, were injured and the police had to fire rubber bullets and teargas shells to disperse the mobs.

“We have deployed extra police force in the area and are keeping a close watch on the situation,” Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria told IANS.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested 30 people for violence and arson in the town.
