Baghdad to lift curfew after Sadr’s ceasefire call

By Xinhua

Baghdad : The curfew imposed on Baghdad will be lifted Monday morning, Iraq’s state TV said on Sunday.

The curfew will be over at 6 a.m. (0300 GMT) Monday morning, the al-Iraqiya TV station said, adding a traffic ban will continue in three Shiite neighborhoods controlled by followers of cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

The curfew was announced Thursday night. It should have ended Sunday morning but was extended Saturday night.

The removal of the rule came after Sadr ordered his Mahdi Army to stand down on Sunday.

The six-day conflicts between the Shiite militants and the security troops have killed more than 100 people in Baghdad.
