New Delhi : Four men early Monday forced a 22-year-old woman into a car and assaulted her in an incident that is a grim reminder of how unsafe the national capital’s roads can be for women.

The incident occurred in northwest Delhi’s Pitampura area around 3 a.m. when the woman and a colleague were going home after a party in Sapphire pub on a motorbike.

Both work in Genpact Technologies, a call centre located in Gurgaon, on outskirts of Delhi.

“Near CD block temple of Pitampura, a Mahindra jeep overtook our vehicle, and intercepted us. While overtaking our bike, the men even threw stones at us,” the victim said in her police complaint.

“A man dressed in undershirt and lungi got of the vehicle with an iron rod and smashed it against my friend’s back. When I tried to raise alarm he called his other friends and they dragged me to their vehicle,” she added.

The victim is a native of Madhya Pradesh and staying in Pitampura with her friends.

According to her colleague, four men who appeared to be in their 20s chased them in a Mahindra jeep and forced them to stop.

“They immediately seized my bike key. There was a heated argument between us. They called us names and brutally assaulted both of us,” the woman’s colleague stated in his complaint to the police.

“They dragged her to their jeep. When I protested, they again beat me up and fled the scene. I somehow managed to call the police.”

The assailants also smashed the headlights of his bike.

According to the police, the men assaulted the girl in their car before dumping her in the same area.

“We have registered a case at the Shalimar Bagh police station and teams have been sent to nab the assailants, who appear to be from some village,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest Delhi) Sanjay Kumar.
