Tehran : More than 70 students of Tehran-based universities Saturday staged a rally outside the Dutch Embassy to protest against a controversial anti-Islamic film made by a Dutch lawmaker.
Chanting slogans such as “Dutch ambassador to Iran should be expelled,” the students condemned the release of the film and called for the closure of Dutch companies including Shell and Phillips in Iran, the official IRNA news agency reported.
Mohammad Sadeq Shahbazi, a representative of the protesting students, said the imperialists are always trying to harm Muslim countries and “the global arrogance has tried to show its hostility against Islam over the past years.”
“Today is no more the time for the reign of the superpowers and we, the students, will not be idle confronting the domestic and the foreign enemies,” added Shahbazi.
The police prevented the angry students from attacking the Dutch Embassy as some protesters threw three or four eggs and a couple of small stones, Iran’s Fars news agency reported.
The release of the anti-Islamic film “Fitna,” made by Dutch right-wing lawmaker Geert Wilders, has caused outrage among Muslims worldwide and drawn extensive condemnation.
In the some 16- or 17-minute film, footage of terrorist attacks in New York, Madrid and London is shown together with verses from the Koran and statements by radical imams. It also shows the disputed Danish cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad with a bomb in his turban.
