New Delhi : As the Indian Davis Cup team produced some great tennis to get nearer the Davis Cup World Group, the lush green court at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association came in for praise from both the teams.
The court not only looked like a green carpet but has also generated true bounce, which was evident as play progressed in the tie.
“We had started preparing the court from the Uzbekistan tie last month. But at that time the grass had not grown. The effort put in at that time has produced the result now,” gushed Nar Singh, director, tennis coaching DLTA and the curator of the court.
Japan’s Kei Nishikori and Go Soeda who went down fighting to Rohan Bopanna and Prakash Amritraj though said they had some difficulty in adapting on grass, but they had no complaints about the court itself. In fact, they had a word of praise for the centre court.
“The court is really good. It is just that we are not used to playing on grass as we have grown playing on hardcourts,” said Japan’s non-playing captain Eiji Takeuchi.
Singh conceded that court was made in consultation with the home players, who made it clear that they want a green carpet for the Davis Cup tie.
“I spoke to the players and they told me that they want an ideal grass court where the ball skids and keeps low to the benefit of the home side,” he said.
According to Singh the court will become harder and the bounce will also increase as more matches are played on it.
