Srinagar : A top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant was among two militants killed in two shootouts in Jammu and Kashmir Saturday.
Police said troops of 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the state police mounted a search operation in Chakura village of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, 40 km from here, in the afternoon on specific information about the presence of two guerrillas.
“As the security forces were busy searching the village, militants opened fire at them. A fierce encounter ensued in an open area in the village which ended late Saturday afternoon with the killing of a top militant of LeT identified as Shabir Ahmed Bhat. He was a category ‘A’ militant,” a police spokesman here said.
“Searches in the village are still continuing.”
Troops of 47 RR and police gunned down a militant of Harkatul Mujaheedin (HuM) in Kandi village of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, 110 km from here in the afternoon.
“Firing exchanges are still continuing,” the spokesman said.
