New Delhi : It was another warm day in the national capital Sunday with the maximum temperature over 35 degrees Celsius even as the summer took its first toll in Orissa with a woman succumbing to the heat wave.
Delhi had a sunny and warm day as the maximum temperature was at 36.0 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the day. But the Met Office has forecast that an approaching disturbance could bring in fresh showers.
The weatherman has forecast wet weather over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Chandigarh, and north Rajasthan April 15-16.
The maximum temperature in the northern plains and the central India were around 40-42 degrees Celsius. Patna and Bhopal recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, and Nagpur too marked a sharp riser of mercury to 42 degrees Celsius.
The Weather Office has forecast that the temperatures could rise further in the next couple of days.
Meanwhile, a heat wave gripping the state of Orissa claimed its first victim.A 40-year-old woman died of sunstroke in mineral-rich Keonjhar district, an official said Sunday.
Ramani Tanthi, a resident of Barahatipura, 35 km from here and some 180 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, had gone to the forest Saturday to collect Mahua flowers that are used for making country liquor.
“She returned home in the evening. She began vomiting and had headache. She died on way to the hospital,” her husband Raghaba Tanthi told IANS.
The police sent her body for post-mortem examination Sunday. “It was sunstroke that killed her,” said Abani Bhusan Jena, the doctor who conducted the autopsy.
Many areas of Orissa are in the grip of a heat wave as the mercury crossed the 40 degrees Celsius mark Saturday, an official of the Bhubaneswar meteorological office here said.
The maximum temperature was recorded in Cuttack city at 40.6 degrees Celsius. Keonjhar district recorded over 39 degrees Celsius temperature, he said.
The western Orissa town of Jharsuguda recorded 40.4 degrees Celsius and Cuttack saw the day’s high at 40.6 degrees Celsius.
Similarly, at least five towns recorded over 39 degrees Celsius temperature.
