IITs to set aside nine percent seats for OBCs

By IANS,

New Delhi : All seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will start implementing the reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) students by setting aside nine percent seats for them and increasing the overall student intake by 13 percent.

The IITs will implement in three years the 27 percent quota mandated by law.

“The directors of all seven IITs and HRD (human resource development) ministry officials had a meeting in the morning (Wednesday) and we decided to implement nine percent OBC quota from the new academic session later this year,” IIT Delhi director Surendra Prasad said.

“This will force us to increase the student intake by 13 percent,” he added.

Three new IITs coming up in Bihar, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh will implement the full 27 percent quota from their first academic session this year, he said.
