Two cops killed Maoist attack in Jharkhand

Ranchi : Two policemen were killed and four injured in an attack by Maoist militants in Gumla district of Jharkhand, police said.

Militants attacked a police party Thursday night when they were on their way to the Raidih police station in Gumla district, 140 km from here. In the attack one Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) and one constable died while four others sustained injures, they said.

The injured constables were admitted to a local hospital.

According to police, one Mohhamad Juluk was arrested on charges of being a Maoist activist. The police team was attacked when they were on their way to the police station along with the arrested person. The rebels fired at the police jeep and freed Juluk.

Police have launched a combing operation to search the militants involved in the incident.

Maoist rebels are active in 18 of the 22 districts of Jharkhand. Nearly 740 people, including 290 security personnel, have been killed in the last six years in extremist violence.
