Five-constituency system prompts merger of 12 Diwaniyas

By KUNA,

Kuwait : Hosts of 12 Diwaniyas (Kuwaiti men social gathering place) decided that merger of their Diwaniyas is a wise step to cope with the newly implemented five-constituency election system.

The idea for the merger came from Menawer Al-Hadba in Umariya area who told KUNA this helps cope with the short space of time left and the great number of headquarters to visit, candidates to get to know, and ultimately, Diwaniyas to visit to discus these and other related issues.

He added the joint Diwaniya would allow candidates more time to review their agendas and also allow audiences more of a chance to express their concerns and debate the issues. This is a wise move for a constituency of 18 residential areas and 90,000 voters, he stressed.

The plan is to hold two sessions per week to help provide exposure for all, he pointed out.

Meanwhile, one Diwaniya frequenter, Adnan Ahmad, said all the visitors and hosts have the state’s best interest at heart in common and this gives us a better chance to know who and what is out there. Candidates would benefit from the extra time that used to be wasted in transportation and planning and coordination, he said. They are also to get wider audiences per meeting.

This innovative move comes in the fourth constituency which covers 18 residential areas and 93,710 eligible voters, including 54,351 women.
