New Delhi : The central government Wednesday informed parliament that Uttar Pradesh had sought Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probes into 21 cases in the last three years of which five have been taken up for investigation.
“The Uttar Pradesh government had recommended 21 cases for initiating a CBI enquiry since Jan 1, 2005. Out of these, five cases have since been entrusted to the CBI for investigation,” said Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievance and Pensions Prithviraj Chavan.
“Eight of these cases were not found feasible to be entrusted to the CBI while three were referred back to the state government for further clarifications. The remaining five cases were received comparatively recently. And the feasibility of entrusting these to the CBI is being examined,” he said.
The minister said each request from the state government is considered and decided on merit, keeping in mind the provisions of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946.
Commenting on the 10 cases Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has recommended for a CBI probe, Minister of State for Home Shriprakash Jaiswal had recently said:”The country’s premier investigation agency can take up only such cases that involve more than one state. It is not possible for CBI to take up anything and everything that is referred to it by the state governments.”
The 10 cases the Mayawati government has recommended for a CBI probe in the last 10 months include the large-scale police recruitment scam during the tenure of the previous state government led by Mulayam Singh Yadav. Another case she sought a CBI probe was the controversial CD allegedly released by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders ahead of the last state assembly polls.
