Russia’s Lavrov to attend Middle East Quartet meeting in London

By RIA Novosti,

Moscow : Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will pay an official visit to London on May 1-2 to attend a ministerial meeting of the Middle East Quartet, the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

At the London talks, the Quartet, which comprises Russia, the U.S., the UN and the EU, will discuss aid for the Palestinian territories and talk to representatives from Arab League states, as well as discuss plans for a Middle East peace conference in Moscow.

Russia earlier offered to host a conference in Moscow as a follow up to last November’s U.S-sponsored meeting in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Russian foreign minister will also attend in London the next round of six-nation talks on Iran’s controversial nuclear program.

The six countries – the United States, Britain, China, France, Russia, and Germany – have been involved in negotiations to persuade Iran to freeze uranium enrichment, which many countries fear is being used by Tehran as a cover for a nuclear weapons program.

Iran has so far defied three rounds of United Nations Security Council sanctions over its nuclear program. It claims it needs the nuclear program for peaceful power generation.
