Howrah: New Delhi-based human rights organization Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) organised recently a two-day training programme for legal social workers in West Bengal.
Dr. Shakil Ahmad, director (Training), APCR, elaborated on various dimensions and causes of oppression in the country. He discussed the role of legislative system, policymakers and executive bodies in the sustenance of an oppressive system. “A struggle must begin for ensuring rights of marginalized and deprived sections of the country such as women, Dalits, minorities and labourers, he said.
Abdul Rashid Agwan, a guest speaker from New Delhi, spoke on “Responsibilities of Legal Social Workers Striving for Justice.” He discussed social workers’ responsibilities such as generation of awareness, dissemination of information, motivation of victims in time of their need, intervening in particular cases and providing support to lawyers in documentation and lag work.
Advocate Anisur Rahman, a trustee-member of the APCR, coached the delegates on “First Information Report (FIR).” Other issues discussed in the programme included “Arrest” and “Case.”
An interesting session was held wherein some leading human rights activists in the state discussed various aspects of the theme “Violation of Human Rights: Observations & Experiences.” Those expressed their views in the session included Prof. Sadique Hossain, general secretary, Asian Front of Human Rights, Saiful Haque, a leading human rights activist of Kolkata, Abdul Aziz, vice-president, West Bengal Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and Kazi Safiuddin Ahmad, Kolkata High Court Advocate.
In continuation of its nation-wide series of training programmes, APCR organized the event which was sponsored by West Bengal unit of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. The training camp was held at Islami Siksha-o-Gabesna Parishad, Sakharidah in Howrah district. APCR has organized such programmes in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
