Delhi hospital under scanner for child selling racket

New Delhi : Delhi Police Monday carried out raids at a private nursing home in west Delhi over suspicion that it could be linked to a racket in illegal sale of new born babies.

Sleuths of the Delhi Police special staff swooped down on the New Medical Centre in Moti Nagar area in the afternoon.

The police said the owner, Monica Thappar, a 42-year-old gynaecologist, and her husband P.K. Thappar, a senior army official, had been missing from the centre for sometime.

The husband and wife stay on the top floor of the hospital.

The police claimed to have seized some incriminating documents from the spot.

The New Medical Centre came under the scanner after the arrest of three women and a man from Bengali Market last month who were allegedly trying to sell a three-day-old infant.

“Jyoti, the kingpin of the racket, revealed to us that the baby was born in the same hospital. We are verifying the involvement of the hospital and its staff,” said a police official.

In her interrogation, Jyoti said she used to look out for pregnant maidservants and other women who were not prepared to raise their children. She would try to win their confidence and after the birth of the baby sell the infants to childless couples.
